Academic or General Training?
The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in IELTS Academic and General Training. Reading and Writing are different. Academic Writing Task 1 focuses on visual information; General Training Task 1 is a letter. Choose the test type required by your institution or application before choosing practice materials.

Good morning. Thank you for calling the community learning centre. Our new English conversation class starts on Monday, the ninth of November. Classes are held twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, from six to seven thirty in the evening. Please bring a notebook. The first session takes place in room twelve, beside the library. If you need to change your registration, please call us before Friday.

A garden shared by a neighbourhood
When an unused plot became available beside a local library, a group of residents suggested turning it into a community garden. They wanted space to grow vegetables and a place where neighbours could meet. The group began with four raised beds and a small collection of donated tools.
Volunteers now meet most weekends, although attendance is flexible. Some people help with watering during the week, while others repair equipment or teach new members how to plant seeds. The organisers keep a notebook in the shed so that everyone can see which jobs have already been completed.
The project has also faced difficulties. During a dry month, the group had to change its planting schedule and use water more carefully. Rather than abandoning the garden, members chose crops that needed less water. They now discuss seasonal plans before buying seeds.

Plan first. Then make your argument.
Some people think students should learn practical skills at school, while others believe academic subjects should be the priority. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Spend about 40 minutes and write at least 250 words. Explain both views, make your own position clear and support your ideas with relevant examples.

Task 1 preparation
Academic candidates should practise selecting and summarising the main features of a chart, table, process or map. General Training candidates should practise letters that answer every bullet in the prompt with an appropriate tone. Task 1 requires at least 150 words; the official recommendation is about 20 minutes. Use the official samples below for the correct task type.
Develop an answer in your own words.
Describe a useful skill you learned.
You should say what the skill is, when you learned it, how you learned it, and explain why it is useful to you.
Take one minute to prepare notes. Then speak for up to two minutes. Focus on a real example rather than a memorised answer.
Follow-up discussion
Why do some people find it difficult to learn a new skill?
Should schools teach more practical skills? Explain your view.
