How do I practise translation in both directions?

Read one Urdu sentence and say its English meaning before opening the answer. Check the person, tense, quantity and politeness. Then close the Urdu version and translate the English sentence back. The wording can differ while the meaning stays accurate.

  1. Start with a situation you recognise, such as asking a teacher for help.
  2. Notice one useful pattern: Could you…?, How much…? or I have…
  3. Replace a detail with your own. Keep the grammar around it consistent.
  4. Use the printable worksheet for another attempt, then compare the separate answer key.

Why does a word-for-word translation sometimes sound wrong?

Languages do not express every idea with the same word order or the same number of words. “مجھے پیاس لگی ہے” is naturally “I am thirsty”. Translating each Urdu word separately misses the English expression. Look at the whole message, including who is speaking and to whom.
